Technology implications: student and staff use at home and at school

This segment will provide guidance on the following issues and more:

  • administration's authority regarding social networking activity and other communications when a staff member is away from school;

  • when a staff member's communications with a student become unethical under Iowa law, and steps administrators should take;

  • what authority, if any, a school administrator has to discipline students for off-campus snaps, photos, messages, posts and communications;

  • some of the most common school administrator missteps regarding student and staff technology;

  • speech rights students and staff members have to post comments about school-related issues.

Participants will learn about Iowa and federal law, as well as go over a variety of scenarios with other school administrators.
