School Safety and Iowa Code Changes

  • What must Iowa school leaders do to ensure compliance with recently passed school safety legislation?
  • When and to what extent do school officials have authority to perform searches relating to allegations of student misbehavior occurring on or off school grounds?
  • When are school officials required to share security video with parents and other outside parties?
  • What steps might school officials consider taking when adults, whether parents or other community members, are acting erratically or inappropriately?

Put your learning into practice with hands-on scenarios addressing these and other school safety concerns.

Recent Legal Developments

The other segment of the Fall Legal Lab relates to a variety of recent legal developments.

  • In light of the new law, what may or may not schools do concerning school meal debt?
  • What are some potential steps school officials might take to counteract the vaping epidemic among Iowa students? Also, what are some legal considerations regarding vaping devices?
  • How might administrators handle allegations that a staff member is under the influence of alcohol while at school, and what legal obligations do school officials have to involve law enforcement or the BoEE?
  • What rights do students and employees have regarding the use of assistive animals? What questions may administrators ask and what factors may be considered?

Come and explore these and other topics.
