Student & Staff Speech Rights
• Participants will learn more concerning student and staff rights relating to the recent debate over individuals kneeling or sitting during the national anthem, with a focus on students and visitors in the stands, as well as athletes and coaches on the playing field or court.
• The student speech topic will also cover when a student may or may not display the Confederate flag, whether
on clothing, on a vehicle in the school parking lot, or away from school.
• Speech rights on social media will cover the rights of both students and staff members to post on personal as
well as school media sites.
Attendance & Truancy
This segment will address
• compulsory-age students and Iowa's truancy laws, to include the nuances between elementary and
secondary students;
•tuition-free education in Iowa;
•issues relating to attendance age (regarding the youngest and oldest students);
•how issues regarding transportation discipline may affect attendance, and more.
